What we track
Three times a week we snapshot the spread, total, and moneyline for every NFL and college football game across major US sportsbooks, then compare each new snapshot against the last one and against the opening line.
What counts as a signal
STEAM— the line jumped fast between checks (1+ point). Books scrambling usually means respected money just landed.REVERSE LINE MOVE— the line moved a full point or more from the opener. The market is telling you where the smart money sits.KEY NUMBER— the spread crossed 3 or 7, the most common winning margins in football. Every half point around those numbers is real money.TOTAL STEAM— the over/under moved 2+ points. Sharp opinion on pace, weather, or injuries.SHARP MONEY— a side has far more of the handle than of the bets (15+ point gap). Big money, few bets: the classic respected-money fingerprint.SHARP REVERSE— the line moved a full point toward the side the public is fading (40% of bets or fewer). The money and the crowd disagree — the money usually wins those.PUBLIC— 65%+ of bets are on one side. This is a fade candidate, never a sharp side. Crowded sides are the ones books love to beat.
Where the splits come from
Bet % (% of tickets) and handle % (% of money) come from Action Network's free public betting pages, per side on the spread. We show them as two separate lines because they answer different questions: bets tell you where the crowd is, handle tells you where the money is. When they disagree, pay attention.
Strength meter
Lean = mild move worth watching. Strong = clear sharp-style move. Extreme = the kind of move that makes books sweat. Bigger moves = stronger signal, but a signal is not a winner.
Heavy favorites
Games with double-digit spreads get called out separately (10+ in the NFL, 14+ in college). Books expect a blowout — and heavy chalk is where public money loves to pile on, which is exactly when the line is most worth questioning.
Top 25
Ranked games use the AP Top 25 (refreshed weekly). Rank badges wear each team's real colors. A poll is a starting point, not a power rating — unranked teams cover big spreads all the time.
Honest limits
- We infer sharp action from line movement plus public bet/handle splits — a line move with no splits disagreement could still be injury or weather news. Always check the news behind a flag.
- Checks run 3× per week, not live. A steam move between checks shows up at the next one.
- Opening lines are our earliest snapshot, not the true opener.
- A flag is a starting point for your own research — never a bet slip.
